Intermezzo
The New England Chamber Opera Series

Intermezzo was born out of a vision to produce contemporary chamber operas and bring new and exciting works to the musical life in New England.  Chamber opera merges the musical and dramatic flavor of grand opera with the immediacy of art song, performed on a smaller, more intimate scale.

Our focus is on performing contemporary 20th and 21st century chamber works, particularly by American composers, and sung in English.  Beginning in 2003 Intermezzo has pursued a path of bringing some of the area's most exciting singers, composers, and directors together to produce classic, rarely performed works, and new commissions to the stage. We are very proud of our success over the past five seasons, with six commissions, a growing following, critical acclaim, and a wide array of repertoire under our belt.

"Intermezzo is an invaluable champion of new opera."
Boston Globe

We are looking forward to our 2009 season, where we join forces with Wellesley College and Brandeis University for a joint production of Vaughan Williams' Riders to the Sea in March, and Benjamin Britten's The Prodigal Son in September, 2009.

Intermezzo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Your tax deductible contributions are greatly appreciated.  If you are interested in becoming a supporter of Intermezzo, please contact John Whittlesey, Founder and Artistic Director, at 617-899-4261 for more information.

Intermezzo's production of Curlew River was named "Best Staged Opera" on Lloyd Schwartz's Top 10 Classical list for 2006 !
